Here are 3 pretty cool LA events coming right up:
#1 on Oct. 10: The Planning and Conservation League comes to UCLA this Saturday to talk with local leaders about local investments that are critical to making LA carbon neutral and a great city to live in. This is a critical year for global climate action, with strong climate leadership in the California Legislature, President Obama’s announcement of a Clean Power Plan, and the Paris talks coming right up. From the vantage point of 2030 we could look back and view 2015 as the year the world started making real change in climate policy.
But once the goals are set change has to happen locally: The agenda focuses on conversation about nexus between climate change and urbanization, sustainability, equity, transit, housing and technology, and how to fund the vision. Speakers include CA Senate President Pro Tempore Kevin de Leon, CA Senator Fran Pavley, CA Air Resources Board Chair Mary Nichols, Move LA’s Denny Zane and a cast of local leaders. 9a to 5p at UCLA’s School of Law. Read more here.
#2 on Oct. 23: The Los Angeles Business Council stages their annual Mayoral Housing, Transportation and Jobs Summit, also at UCLA. Speakers include Mayor Garcetti, of course, the Honorable Henry Cisneros of CityView, Honorable Mark Ridley-Thomas, Tony Salazar of McCormack Baron Salazar, and Metro CEO Phil Washington, as well as many other state and local leaders. Conversation will focus on:
- How LA will demonstrate its transit and housing readiness by the 2024 Olympics;
- LA’s innovative approaches to increasing housing production and keeping it affordable;
- Connecting the LA River to development opportunities at Metro stations
- How LA’s burgeoning technology sector and start-ups will provide new opportunities for LA’s workforce
- The potential for a new sales tax measure that provides billions for more transportation projects.
At Korn Convocation Hall, 7a to 2p. Find out more and register here.
#3 on Nov. 6: Climate Resolve, ecoAmerica and local leaders will draft a Los Angeles Declaration on Climate Change at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles. By the end of the day a declaration will have been drafted stating how we are going to get from here – with climate change exacerbating the drought, air pollution and our health and welfare – to a positive energy future. This is what Climate Resolve is calling “The Path to Positive.” Meet fellow climate warriors, and learn about tested messaging and strategies that make a difference. RSVP and find out more here.
