California is writing a whole new breathtaking chapter in the story of its leadership in fighting air pollution and climate change! This past year under the leadership of Gov. Gavin Newsom and California Air Resources Board Chair Mary Nichols amazing things have been done. 

For example, in June CARB adopted the Advanced Clean Truck Rule that requires truck manufacturers to aggressively proliferate an expanding fleet of zero-emission trucks likely to be powered by either or both electric batteries or hydrogen fuel cells. 

In September Governor Newsom adopted an Executive Order that says no gasoline cars will be sold in California after 2035! And there will be an ever-expanding fleet of zero-emission cars for California consumers until then! That is just around the corner in climate terms! 

Imagine, soon, no more gasoline cars!  
And fairly soon, no more diesel trucks! 

As a result of this progress, every vehicle technology and most equipment will soon have zero-emission options as well—even trains, ships, boats and aircraft. And what is not zero-emission will be the cleanest available technology.

Where and why did this transformation begin and who should we thank? Below are two of the heroes you have probably never heard of, who helped start California's movement toward clean cars and trucks while fighting air pollution in the late '80s and early '90s, when they developed and adopted the world’s first Zero-Emission Vehicle Mandate. Everything zero-emission starts there!

Look them up! Or wait, and we'll tell you about them at one of our later programs. Because without their efforts we might not even have a chance of defeating climate change. And because of them, we will defeat climate change!
