NRDC POLL FINDS LIBERAL DEMS TO CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICANS CHOOSE TRANSIT OVER ROADS

A new poll published by NRDC shows red, blue and purple support for transit over roads — though liberal Democrats are five times more likely to want transit while conservative Republicans are only 70 percent more likely. Half of all big city residents want transit, while only 15 percent want more roads, and even rural areas prefer transit to roads — 36 percent to 24 percent.

And this is interesting: only a third of those responding to the poll had taken transit or ridden a bike at any time during the last month. Only two-thirds had ever ridden transit or a bike.

The poll finds that when asked what would solve traffic problems in their community, 42 percent of Americans say more transit, while 20 percent want roads. 21 percent would like to see communities developed in such a way that less driving is required. And two-thirds support local planning that channels new development into existing cities and near public transportation.
